Amouage’s Exceptional Extraits revisit familiar fragrances through a precise change of scale: the concentration of perfume oils, the time allowed for ageing and the balance of the composition. The latest additions, Decision 42 and Overture 41, bring two different creative narratives into that process. One draws on the image of a tree struck by lightning; the other expands the operatic story behind Overture Woman.
For Overture 41, Chief Creative Officer Renaud Salmon worked with perfumer Annick Menardo to revisit the fragrance she originally created. Its imagined protagonist is an understudy suddenly called upon to replace a grand diva. In the new interpretation, that fictional singer is conceived as a legend in her own right. It is a narrative framework for the perfume, rather than a literal account of a performer.

Decision 42 takes a different route. Salmon and Quentin Bisch return to the juniper tree at the centre of Decision, using its encounter with lightning as the creative starting point for the new extrait. Where Overture turns towards the stage, Decision looks to the natural world. The connection between them lies in their shared interest in heightened emotion and transformation.

The numbers specify concentration: Decision 42 contains 42% perfume oils and Overture 41 contains 41%. Both undergo six weeks of ageing. Amouage describes these choices as the result of testing different concentrations and ageing periods to reach the intended expression of each composition. The figures explain the development process; they are not a substitute for an individual experience of the fragrances on skin.

The bottles extend the contrast. Decision 42 uses a seagull-grey inner lacquer, while Overture 41 takes on a rich amber colour. Belgian artist Louise Mertens created the imagery used on the outer packaging, with gold dust adding a final visual accent. Campaign still lifes echo those worlds through sculptural wood and draped golden fabric.
Overture Woman first appeared in 2020, followed by Decision in 2025. Their new Exceptional Extraits were introduced in September 2026, making this a deliberate reworking of established ideas. For readers drawn to the relationship between perfumery and storytelling, Overture 41 offers a particularly theatrical point of entry.
