Guerlain marked Shalimar’s centenary in 2025 with L’Essence, an interpretation that concentrates on one of the fragrance’s defining notes: vanilla. For perfumer Delphine Jelk, the starting point was a personal interest in the original amber accord rather than the pressure of producing an anniversary statement.
In a brand-supplied interview, Jelk connects the project to her earlier Shalimar Millésime Vanille. She explains that its reception led to a relaunch under the Essence name. That continuity is important: L’Essence is presented as a way of exploring a familiar fragrance through a particular facet, rather than discarding the composition that gave Shalimar its identity.

Jelk describes amplifying the vanilla while reducing the prominence of bergamot, which she associates with the fragrance’s more vintage character. Modern musks introduce another change in emphasis. Her intention, she explains, was to soften the animalic aspect while retaining the recognisable centre of the perfume.
The vanilla accord is assembled from different materials. Ethylvanillin contributes sweetness, while Guerlain’s vanilla tincture brings the spicy, leathery and smoky nuances highlighted by Jelk. The house describes making that tincture at its Orphin workshops, where Madagascan vanilla pods are cut by hand before macerating in alcohol. The process is one of the concrete links between the new presentation and Guerlain’s established perfumery practice.

The full composition also includes a quieter bergamot opening, a floral heart of rose absolute and iris, and the supporting musks. These elements frame the vanilla rather than allowing the note to stand alone. The interest is in the balance between its different expressions: sweetness, warmth and the more textured facets described by the perfumer.
The bottle retains Shalimar’s familiar silhouette, with revised, Art Deco-inflected lettering for L’Essence. It provides a visual counterpart to Jelk’s approach: a recognisable form reconsidered through a concentrated adjustment. Read beyond its 2025 anniversary setting, the fragrance offers a useful study in how an established composition can be revisited without losing its central character.
